We’re featured in Derbyshire Life!

July 19, 2018 by Simon Mackney

We feel incredibly proud to have been featured in the Derbyshire Life magazine, all about our work recreating the famous Joseph Wright painting of Sir Richard Arkwright with business leaders Robert Kirkland and Liz Fothergill.

Visitors to Derby’s Museum and Art Gallery’s The Art of Industry exhibition this spring would have come across two incredible modern-day versions of Joseph Wright’s painting of Sir Richard Arkwright displayed on the walls.

These photographs – showing local business leaders Liz Fothergill and Robert Kirkland as the 18th century industrial tycoon Sir Richard Arkwright – are the work of local photographer Simon Mackney, who has built up his professional career in photography in the county for over 20 years.

Originally from Essex, Simon moved to Derbyshire with his family in 1987 aged just 10, when his father was offered a job with the chemical company Lubrizol. They have stayed here ever since.

Some of Simon’s earliest work was shooting images for Lubrizol and the industrial genre became a key style of Simon’s work. However, after three years of working there, Simon decided to start a photography company in his own right. “I applied for a grant from The Prince’s Trust and was lucky enough to receive it. With the grant and match funding from the bank, I was able to buy my first ‘proper’ camera, a Canon 10D – only 10 megapixels but plenty to worth with – plus a set of studio lights and travel pack for location lighting. As far as I was concerned back then, I was all set and ready to go ” Simon describes. ‘I moved back to live with my parents, and set up a bedroom office. I remember sitting by the phone waiting for work to come in, but it didn’t, and I soon realised that I had to get out there and show my portfolio, which I did. This way of working – introducing my work around the region – soon paid off and I ended up working for most of the design studios around the Midlands. After a few years I missed my portrait work, especially photographing people, so I started to set up a portrait business, hiring out village halls in the locality’.

The business took off and with the help of the Channel 4 flagship programme Location Location Location in 2007, Simon and his wife and business partner, Wendy, were filmed trying to find a house that they could convert into a home studio. This scenario never materialised, however by 2012, Simon and Wendy had established one of the most stylish photographic studios in the region, based in the historic Darley Abbey Mills complex.

Roll on another five years and in 2017 Simon and Wendy opened a second state-of-the-art photography studio, also located in the Darley Abbey Mills, which focuses on the commercial and digital editing side of the photography business, simply named ‘Mackney Creative’.

‘I am so proud of where we’ve got to in the past decade,’ declares Simon, who alongside Wendy, heads up a 15-strong team of photography professionals. “The Simon of 15 years ago, just starting out with basic kit and loads of ideas, would be bowled over if he saw what we do today! I owe it to the great team we have working with us, as well as support and leadership from Wendy and the encouragement of my family.”

But hard work plays a huge factor, with Simon and Wendy both putting in sometimes 12 hour days to get jobs finished; trips across the region to do shoots, and attending many shows and events to get the Mackney brand out there.

A tour around either of Mackney studios shows the high quality of these workspaces. They are the standard of a top London art studio  located here in a village just outside Derby. The spaces are stylish and original, with areas offering various purpose made sets, including a fairy woodland scene, ‘winter’ as a backdrop, and a cosy space for newborn baby photos.

Baby portraits form a huge part of the studios business, with babies as young as two days old coming for their first photos to be taken. There are rooms for make-up and costume changing, full catering facilities as well as a wood-burning stove which burns bright as clients relax on large leather sofas, sipping fresh coffee, herbal tea or a glass of wine while they discuss the images they are looking for.

‘We want to create a really relaxed space for people to enjoy their experience with us’ explains Wendy, who worked as a successful fashion designer for over a decade in London, Hong Kong and New York before joining the business as partner in 2012.’

‘Many people are nervous before a photoshoot. We break down these barriers, allow people to get in to the process. The results always come out better.’  Wendy brings an extra dimension to the business, not offered by regular photographic companies; advising and supporting clients for a makeover shoot or fashion-led portrait, creating portraits that are as much an art piece as a photograph.

Simon and Wendy continue to pick up national awards for the business as its success grows. Last year they won a national retail award for their Pop! cinematic portrait business and achieved gold at this year’s British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) awards.

The recent Joseph Wright project between Derby Museums and Mackney Photography saw Simon’s work in a major exhibition for the first time, something he hopes to continue and build on: “One day I would love to have an exhibition of all my work. The recent exhibition offered a superb opportunity to collaborate. It would be great to work on more projects with Derby Museums,’ Simon remarks.

“Seeing my work on the walls of one of our most important cultural spaces in the county – and more importantly hearing the positive comments from people as they study the pieces, is what all the hard work is for.”

In the meantime, Simon and Wendy continue to pick up national awards for the business; winning gold at this year’s British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) awards, last year winning a national retail award for their Pop! cinematic portrait business. It’s safe to say that Mackney Photography looks set to go from strength to strength.

National award for innovation goes to Pop! by Derby’s Mackney Photography

April 20, 2018 by Simon Mackney

A national retail award for ‘Commercialisation Innovation of the Year’ has gone to Darley Abbey Mills’ based Mackney Photography, for Pop! – a personalised children’s photography pop up studio, enabling youngsters to have their picture taken in front of mind blowing props.

The brain child of Simon and Wendy Mackney, Pop! has been based in Derby city centre’s intu and has seen hundreds of children transformed in to superheroes, fairies, warriors, sports stars and characters from famous children’s fairy-tales.

The prestigious SCEPTRE award was presented to Mackney Photography in London last month, who attended the ceremony alongside intu Derby.

Pop! forms one arm of multiple-award winning Mackney Photography, and focuses solely on the creation of exciting, child-friendly, prop-based photos where children are turned in to their favourite characters with the expertise and artistic eye of Mackney’s team of photographers and art directors.

Founder of Mackney Photography, Simon Mackney, says: “We’ve been fortunate enough to be able to work with prop makers from major films like Harry Potter, Bond and Tarzan to creative innovative backdrops which children just fall in love with. What child wouldn’t like to be transformed in to a superhero or a character from their favourite book?”

He continues: “We are so excited to pick up a national award for this concept, which has taken off hugely here in Derby. We are able to create totally personalised artwork for children and their families, and using our highly skilled editing team, the final picture is something to be proud of…I know we are!”

The Pop! shop at intu Derby was originally scheduled to be open for just six weeks, but stayed open for double the time due to high demand. There are now plans to roll out Pop! more widely across the region.

Pop! at intu Derby greatly impressed judges at the national award ceremony, which celebrates the best practice and the best people in the shopping centre industry, focusing on management teams, retailers and suppliers that demonstrate real excellence.

Carly Salisbury, marketing manager at intu Derby, comments: “Pop! By Mackney is such an innovative idea, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for them – it’s truly well deserved.”

Mackney Photography scoops GOLD at national awards

April 20, 2018 by Simon Mackney

Derby-based photography company, Mackney Photography, has won a prestigious gold award in the 2018 BIPP Professional Photography Awards.

The awards, which are held annually in London by the British Institute of Professional Photography, took place last week on March 1st where Simon Mackney picked up gold for his series of commercial portraits titled ‘PB Sports’.

Simon’s images which feature athletics, basketball and cricket, were selected for gold out of entries from several countries. The award is a true achievement – five separate images must be entered for the judges to scrutinise.

Simon, who co-owns Mackney Photography with his wife and business partner, Wendy, has been in the photography business for over 15 years and seen his company expand and evolve.

This is the first ever gold for Simon at the BIPP Professional Photography Awards, which celebrate the very best international photography.

Simon says: “I am truly thrilled to have won gold at this year’s BIPP awards. It’s a tough competition to enter and the standards are extremely high. We wanted the images to be very high end, inspirational images, we used our fast flash high spend studio lighting to freeze the action, capture that moment in time, freezing athletes in motion flying onto crash mats. I feel I have created powerful imagery which fortunately the judges agreed with.”

The photos were shot on green screen then worked on by Tom Harris at Mackney Creative. During the process, Simon was able to work very closely with several upcoming athletes; to create fresh, modern and smart photography.

Within the commercial arm to Mackney Photography, Simon oversees an experienced team of creative professionals to deliver photography services for a range of genres – including corporate, industrial, product, architecture, sports and food.

The editing team below:

Simon and his team specialise in working with sports brands and athletes – with former subjects including Team GB Bobsleigh team, Derby County FC, Leicester FC, and multi medal winning international triathlete Dave Scott.

Simon’s new state of art commercial studio opened up in 2017 to provide dedicated facilities for commercial photo shoots. See more at http://www.simonmackney.com/

The BIPP Awards present a fantastic opportunity for photographers far and wide to compete. The Professional Photography Awards include various categories such as; Visual Arts; Commercial, Science & Technology and Wedding & Portrait. See more at: http://www.bipp.com/Default.aspx?tabid=1434

Modern-day ‘giants of industry’ transformed to era of Arkwright’s industrial prime – in a new project acknowledging the work of Joseph Wright

April 13, 2018 by Simon Mackney

Forming part of The Grand Tour Season 3, Derby Museums and award-winning photographer Simon Mackney have joined together on a project to recreate two 21st century versions of one of Joseph Wright’s most iconic portraits of the industrial era – the painting of Sir Richard Arkwright, mill owner and entrepreneur.

The painting has been the stimulus behind two original portrait photographs which now form part of ‘The Art of Industry: From Joseph Wright to the 21st Century’ (24 March – 17 June 2018); a new exhibition at Derby Museum and Art Gallery which looks back at the region’s industrial history through both historic artefacts and artistic interpretation.

Derby-based photographer Simon Mackney and digital artist Tom Harris have worked with two of the region’s leaders in industry to recreate the Wright’s portrait of Sir Richard Arkwright – one of the influencers in the industrial era and a pioneer in mill developments which led to mass-scale manufacturing we know today.

Robert Kirkland and Simon Mackney

Liz Fothergill CBE – Chairman of Pennine Healthcare which employs over 300 people in the Derbyshire region – and Robert Kirkland – Director of the Bowmer & Kirkland Group which employs over 1300 people in the UK, UAE & USA – were selected to pose as Arkwright in Simon Mackney’s 21st century take on the Joseph Wright portrait.

The sittings took several hours, and Mackney’s digital artist Tom edited, manipulated and perfected the images in Photoshop over a period of several days to replicate the original painting of Joseph Wright. The final results can be seen at Derby Museum and Art Gallery until mid-June.

The exhibition is available to see until mid June

Following the main themes within the Wright painting but with modern twists, Simon looked to reconstruct Arkwright using contemporary components within the original framework of the piece.

Wright’s style and exceptional use of light is admired by Simon who followed this through his own use of low light; at the same time Wright’s realistic depiction of his subjects worked to the advantage of the medium of photography.

On the project, photographer Simon Mackney says:

“When I was recently reminded of our region’s finest artist, Joseph Wright, and his amazing use of light in his work, I knew I had found my latest inspiration; his work is truly awesome. After visiting the Gallery and appreciating his images close up once again, I felt so inspired to try and embody his work through photography.”

Liz Fothergill CBE, comments:

“What a wonderful experience it has been to sit for a photograph with Simon; a nod to how Arkwright would have sat for Wright all those centuries ago. I am thrilled to have been asked to pose for this exciting project; I always felt that innovation is in the Derbyshire DNA and hope some of that has been exhibited in Pennine’s history. To be picked as one of the modern ‘versions’ of Arkwright and working with Simon Mackney, clearly a master in his field of photography, has been a great pleasure.”

Robert Kirkland comments:

“I was very pleased to be asked to be part of this exciting project celebrating our region’s industrial past –even more so when I realised the photographer overseeing the work was someone I helped gain funding from The Princes Trust to set himself up in the industry over 15 years ago. I am delighted to see what progress Simon has made; Mackney Photography is now a state of art studio in a historic mills setting, with a large team working for Simon and producing excellent work. I am looking forward to seeing what the final outcome of our time spent together will be – and supporting Simon and the Art Of Industry exhibition at Derby’s Museum and Art Gallery.”

The Art of Industry exhibits at Derby Museum and Art Gallery from 24 March – 17 June. Alongside depictions of Britain’s industrial past, the display will be supplemented with objects from Derbyshire’s industries – tools, machines, the products that they made, and the marketing materials which we associate with them. The Art of Industry will show the evolving relationship that artists have had with the manufacturing heritage that helps define the Midlands and its people.

The project and exhibition form part of The Grand Tour, a cultural journey across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, which returns for its third edition until June 2018, with an exceptional programme of exhibitions at four of the UK’s most distinguished arts institutions: Chatsworth, Nottingham Contemporary, The Harley Gallery at Welbeck and Derby Museums; as well as a range of fringe venues across the region.

The Prince’s Trust link which started Mackney Photography off on its professional journey

April 13, 2018 by Simon Mackney

When Robert Kirkland (http://www.bandk.co.uk/    Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd) came to the Mackney commercial studios for his recent sitting with Simon for the Art of Industry exhibition https://www.derbymuseums.org/whats-on/the-art-of-industry-from-joseph-wright-to-the-21st-century , it took no time at all for them to recognise each other and how they had first met due to The Prince’s Trust over 15 years ago…

Simon was successful in applying for a grant from The Prince’s Trust to develop his business, then in its infancy. With the grant and match funding from the bank, the Trust helped Simon purchase his first DSLR camera, a set of studio lights and travel pack for location lighting.

It was Robert Kirkland who was the then Chairman of The Prince’s Trust, Derbyshire, and who helped Simon on his way in his professional career; today employing over 15 people in two contemporary photography studios located in Darley Abbey, Derby http://www.mackney.com/ .

Simon and Robert had not seen each other until the request came to Robert to pose as Sir Richard Arkwright in a modern take on the iconic Joseph Wright painting, which is currently being displayed in Derby’s Museum and Art Gallery.

Robert says: ‘I am delighted to see what progress Simon has made; Mackney Photography is now a state of art photography studio in a historic mills setting, with a large team working for Simon and producing excellent work.’

Simon comments: ‘It was really special to see Robert again after all these years and to work with him on the recent project. The Prince’s Trust funding really helped me establish my dream of a business in professional photography. The money helped me purchase ‘proper’ kit and inspired me to get out there and show my portfolio, which eventually led me to setting up a portrait business and on to the commercial and portrait business we have today.’

MPA National Photographic Awards 2014

October 5, 2014 by Simon Mackney

We are so proud of our photographers Simon Mackney who has 12 Finalist images and Lola Hall who has 2 image in the MPA .  This is it…the creme de la creme of TOP photographers around the UK have been submitting their work over the last few months.  There’s some seriously stiff competition out there as you can see from the website panel.

Action speed

Action speed

The MPA (Master’s Photographer’s Association) is not for the “amateur photographer” – its more technical then that, including being scored on composition, lighting and technical ability…all of which the judges felt Simon and Lola had when scoring them and making them finalists…no easy fete when your competing with the best the UK has to offer…some are even international travelling from Beijing and Germany!!

Last year Simon won the Olympus Wedding Photographer of the year 2013 and gained £1k for the lovely couple we photographed – the Hoptons, oh and a gorgeous Olympus camera for Simon to play with – wonder if he can do the same with Olympus Portrait photographer of the year…he does have two entrants…fingers crossed, as it’s quite rare to have TWO never mind ONE image as a finalist

We originally had 22 images in the finals then had to submit prints to the judging panel where only 12 were then picked out and scored…we won’t find out if we’ve WON till October 19th 2014 in a grand black-tie ceremony in Leicester – so we’ll keep you all updated….no matter what happens – it’s amazing to have made it this far above thousands of entrants!!!  Well done Simon and Lola!
